Historic Window Restoration

Original Wood Windows,
Saved Not Replaced

Century homes in Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, Lakewood, and Ohio City were built with wood sash worth keeping. We scrape, re-glaze, prime, and hand-brush every window, refinish the storms off the house, and publish the price per window.

Every Window, The Same Six Steps

Restoration is not a heavier repaint. It is a different job, done in a fixed order, and skipping any step is how a window peels again in three summers. Here is exactly what each opening gets.

Included on Every Restored Window

  • Pressure wash, then full dry time before any scraping
  • Scrape all lifting and failed paint to sound wood
  • Detail sand so the new coats lay flat
  • Cracked and missing glazing compound cut out and replaced
  • Oil primer on every bare or repaired surface
  • Two finish coats, brushed by hand, clean two-color cut lines

The Parts Other Painters Skip

Wood storms and screens come off the house and get the full treatment on sawhorses: sanded, primed, painted, spray-glazed, then reinstalled square so they open next spring. Soffits, dentil, crown, and rotted decorative pieces are restored in the same pass — traced, rebuilt in our shop to the original profile, and painted to match.

What Century-Home Owners Ask Us

Should I restore or replace my old wood windows?

Restore, almost every time. Old-growth wood sash outlasts any vinyl replacement, keeps the house looking like itself, and costs less per opening than a quality replacement window installed. Replacement makes sense only when the sash itself is rotted through, which is rarer than window salesmen suggest.

Do you pull the storms and screens?

Yes — every one comes off the house, gets sanded, primed, painted, and spray-glazed on sawhorses, then goes back on square. Painting storms in place is how they seize shut.

How do I know if my windows need restoration or just paint?

Look at the north and lake-facing sides. Paint lifting off the sash, glazing compound cracked or missing, or bare wood at the corners means restoration. Sound paint that is just dull or chalky is a repaint at a fraction of the price. We tell you which one honestly, per side of the house.

Can you match the original colors and profiles?

That is the point of the work. Two-color schemes are brushed by hand with clean cut lines, and rotted decorative pieces — eave brackets, trim returns — are traced, rebuilt in our shop to the original profile, and painted to match.

We restore windows across Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, Lakewood, Cleveland, and Chagrin Falls — or pair it with a full exterior repaint.
