Nobody enjoys calling five painters just to find out what a bedroom costs. So here is the straight version — the typical ranges we see across Cleveland and Northeast Ohio, and exactly what moves a quote up or down. Every home is different, which is why estimates are free, but you deserve a ballpark before anyone walks through your door.
Typical ranges in Northeast Ohio
For professional two-coat work with real prep — patching, caulking, sanding, clean cut lines — most projects in our area land inside these ranges:
- Standard bedroom (walls only): $400–$900
- Bedroom with ceiling, trim, and doors: $800–$1,600
- Living room or open family room: $900–$2,200
- Kitchen (walls and trim around cabinetry): $500–$1,200
- Full interior of a 1,500–2,500 sq ft home: $4,500–$12,000+
- Cabinet refinishing (typical kitchen): a fraction of the $25,000+ cost of replacement
What moves the price up
Two identical-looking rooms can quote very differently. The biggest factors are almost always surface condition and detail, not square footage.
- Plaster repair and skim coating — common in Cleveland, Lakewood, and the Heights, where century-home walls have settled for decades
- Ceiling height — two-story foyers and stairwells take staging and time
- Trim condition — decades of brush-marked layers need sanding before they look crisp again
- Color changes — going from dark to light (or deep color on fresh walls) can add a coat
- Wallpaper removal — often the biggest surprise line on any interior quote
Why quotes differ so much between painters
When one quote is half the price of another, the difference is almost never the paint — it is what happens before the paint. A proper job includes protection, patching, sanding, caulking, priming where needed, and two full coats. A cheap job skips to the last step. The finish looks similar for a few months; it does not look similar in year three.
Ask any painter quoting your home two questions: what prep is included, and how many coats are in the price. The answers tell you everything.
