How Much Does Cabinet Refinishing Cost in Northeast Ohio? Our Per-Door Prices

Cabinet refinishing is the highest-return project in a kitchen, and the one with the widest quote spread — three painters can come back with numbers that differ by a factor of two for the same oak kitchen. The difference is almost always what they are counting and what they are skipping. So here is exactly how we count, and what each unit costs, so you can price your own kitchen before anyone visits.

The three things we count

A kitchen is doors, drawer fronts, and boxes. Everything else — hinges, hardware, the sink base, the tall pantry — falls into one of those three. Materials are included at cost on every line.

• Cabinet door, refinished: $175 — removed, degreased, sanded, grain-filled where the wood needs it, bonding primer, two sprayed coats, rehung and adjusted
• Drawer front, refinished: $70 — same process, sprayed off-site
• Cabinet box, refinished in place: $160 — face frame and any exposed end panel, masked, primed, and sprayed in the kitchen

Count your own kitchen

Stand in the kitchen and count. Every hinged panel is a door, including the tall pantry doors and the little ones over the fridge. Every pull-out front is a drawer. Every cabinet carcass is a box — count uppers and lowers separately, and count an island as one box per section. A typical oak kitchen from the 1990s runs 20 to 26 doors, 6 to 10 drawers, and 12 to 16 boxes.

Worked example: 26 doors × $175 = $4,550. 10 drawers × $70 = $700. 14 boxes × $160 = $2,240. Total about $7,500 for a full kitchen, sprayed, in a new color. A bathroom vanity with two doors and three drawers adds about $560 plus one box.

What moves the number

The per-unit prices already include the prep that most quotes leave out, so the count is most of the story. A few things still change it.

• Oak grain: the $175 door price includes grain filling on open-grain wood, which is the step that makes an oak kitchen look like painted maple instead of painted oak. Ask any other quote whether it includes it.
• Laminate and thermofoil: no grain to fill, but a dedicated bonding primer — same price, different prep
• Color: a dark color over light cabinets, or the reverse, does not change the price; we spray two full coats either way
• Glass-front doors, crown molding runs, and open shelving are priced per piece from the walkthrough
• Homeowners who remove and reinstall their own doors and hardware get a credit; ask before you start

Refinish or replace?

New mid-range cabinets for the same 26-door kitchen run $25,000 and up installed, before countertops come off and go back on. Refinishing the boxes you already have, at the count above, lands between $6,000 and $9,000 and keeps your counters, plumbing, and layout untouched. The finish is a sprayed two-part waterborne polyurethane, which is harder and more washable than the factory coating that came on the cabinets in the first place. If the boxes are sound, refinishing wins on money and on time — most kitchens are done in three to five days with the kitchen usable through most of it.
